The Bishop's Visitation on February 19th. We hope that the whole parish will come out to welcome our chief pastor both to show our love for St. John's and to show our support for him as he does his work here in New York for the gospel. You will also be able to support the seven people for confirmation, reception and renewal of Baptismal vows. A potluck will take place that day and we hope that you will bring one of your favorite dishes.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, February 21 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on a drop in basis. Meals are $5, $12 maximum for families with children. All the proceeds from the pancake supper this year go to support the Sunday School's project to buy farm animals for needy villages. In this way they are learning how to respond to Christ's teaching to give generously to those in need.

Ash Wednesday Services, February 22 at Noon and 7:00 P.M. This day is a fast day which traditionally is total abstention from food for the entire day, however, in the west it is a current custom that for working people one light meal and two small snacks are an acceptable way to observe the day. Children, the infirm and ill, and the aged are exempted from all fasts. This marks the first day of Lent, our season of preparation for Easter.

Annual Meeting, Sunday, February 26 after the 10:00 A.M. Service. Please come to this important meeting where we discuss our parish, its priorities, and celebrate the important contributions of time and talent people make to our parish.

Father John did not write a Christmas letter this year. He simply asked the parish administrator to wrap up the Christmas envelope in a scrap of Newspaper and mail it out. Some have noticed however that the scrap of newspaper was from Bethlehem about the year 1 AD. You can inspect it here.

The Pageant rehearsal will be on Saturday, December 17 at 4 PM and the pageant is on Sunday, December 18 at 10 AM.

Advent Evensong Dec. 11 at 5:00 PM

We are delighted to be having an Advent Evensong at St. John's this year. Our organist Don Lundquist and the assistant organist Wayne McClellan have been working very hard. The service will be sung by a choir drawn from the community as well as the parish. The focus is Advent: Preparing for Christmas as we Await the marvelous things God will do in our life.

This is an ideal service to invite friends to attend. It is music and readings and a short homily. Here are TEN Reasons each and every person in Yonkers should come to this Service!

ONE: God is Good and Jesus is the Reason for the Season
TWO: The music will be beautiful
THREE: It is a way to add a little quiet to the business
FOUR: St. John's is a beautiful space to meditate and worship

Angel Tree Gifts: Christmas for those who may have None

Again this year we are partnering with the Salvation Army to provide Christmas presents for those who might otherwise have none. We have 15 names. We are asked this year to provide a toy, shirt, gloves, hat and socks. If we are also able to provide a coat that would be very helpful. They are asking us to get these gifts in by December 12 which is one week from Monday. If you would like a name right away, you may call Father John and he will able to get one to you. We ask that you do not wrap the gifts and we ask that you label them with the number we will provide for you. Thank you very much for your assistance and your taking on the true spirit of Christmas.

We will have our annual homecoming potluck on Sunday, September 25. The purpose for Homecoming Sunday is to gather our group together after the vacations and recreations of summer so that we can have a fellowship filled and spiritually nourishing program for the next 12 months. We also want to encourage those who have perhaps fallen away from attendance to gather with us again for mutual support and fellowship. So pick out your recipe! Invite friends! We will remember 9/11 this Sunday with a special prayers of the people including a significant period of silence when we will light votive candles. It will be a time to pray for those who have died and their families, to pray for reconciliation between people, to pray for an end of violence, and a time to dedicate ourselves to be instruments of understanding and peace in the world.

We will also welcome Irwin Nash who make an appeal for bone marrow donors. His spouse suffers from Leukemia and needs donors.

Our Sunday School will also begin. We will commission students and teachers at the Homecoming service on September 25.

Five members of St. John's attended the Lenten Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. We all had a positive experience. The worship of the monks is perhaps the most nourishing aspect for a few of us. The food is beyond question delicious. The quiet is like water on parched earth. We all recommend that people find time to go to Holy Cross for a quiet retreat.

Martin Smith led the retreat and his topic was "The Terror and Joy: Finding for ourselves the Good News in the Cross". I will summarize some of what I heard him say. Whether he actually said it might be up for discussion. He suggested for our reflection that God when he visits us chooses to be one who bears the suffering of the world. This is a needed corrective for the image of a mighty God on high who sparingly dispenses relief to suffering. No rather, God goes to be in the place of suffering. If we wish to find God we should go to the places of suffering and join him there. By doing so he is able to take us and others through the suffering to new life. The avoidance of suffering might simply lead to more suffering, but by lifting our eyes to contemplate the one who suffers (and to go to be with those who suffer) we are on the path to new life. Easter is not the avoidance of suffering, but the story of one who suffered and through the embrace of those who were loved brings new life. Easter is cross shaped. This is good news because it gives us both hope and a mission. The hope is that God is present even in the suffering all people encounter, it is a mission because we go to minister in places of suffering in order to find God already there.

Do you want more in life? We will explore how we can live in a simple way that deepens our spiritual appreciation for life. We begin on Thursday, March 17, at 7:15 PM with a simple meal. At 7:45 PM we will have a simple contemplative Eucharist and the program itself begins at 8:15 PM. This first week we are looking at the connection between our bodies and spirituality. Come Celebrate the last fling before Lent begins with the whole family on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Look at the publicity flyer here. We will eat pancakes, play games, listen to music and enjoy fellowship. We will begin serving at 5:30 PM and will end at 8:00 PM. Tickets are $5 per person, maximum $15 per family of up to two adults with dependent children. After the service we will bury the Alleluias at 8:00 PM and burn the palms from last year to make the ash for use in the next days services at 8:15 PM. Come and bring a friend.

Our Schedule is Set! Plan to join us!

Lent is a time to prepare for Easter by looking at our lives and seeking to find there signs of the Resurrection. The Risen Christ within us greets the Easter dawn with great joy. However, sometimes our consciousness of the Risen Christ within has grown dim. We seek in these seven weeks to renew our awareness of God's grace present in our life by examination of our conscience, prayer, fasting, alms and service. It is also a good time to explore ways to deepen our spiritual practice and service of God. May God grant us a Holy Lent.

We hope everyone will come, single, couples, whatever because we intend to have a lot of fun. After the meal we will watch a classic romantic movie. Tissue will be provided. It is a puzzlement how the feast of St. Valentine came to be connected with the celebration of romantic love. There is some disagreement as to which St. Valentine the feast actually celebrates. Furthermore the legends that have grown up to explain the connection are unconvincing. Some even go so far as to say the connection was the fabrication of Chaucer to add interest to his Canterbury Tales. Whatever the Case, it sounds like a good excuse for a party to us. After all romantic love seems like a pretty good idea. Let's have fun!

Last night, Monday, Nov. 22, we had a large gathering to give thanks for the many blessings we have in Yonkers. The mayor, Phil Amicone attended, as did the president of the city council, Chuck Lesnick. Yonkers clergy from Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic communities led the service. Afterwards many communities brought food to the reception so graciously run by the congregation at St. John's. Everyone I consulted found it a very inspiring experience.

Soundari Rajavelu Bapitized All Saints' Sunday

Soundari Rajavelu has been preparing for her baptism for six months. We looked at the story of Scripture as described in the Easter Vigil and in the gospel. We explored the Christian perspective on living a life for the love of God and the love of neighbor following the example and living in the power of Jesus Christ. We explored how the Episcopal Church understands the doctrines of the Christian Church. We also engaged in a process where she declared publicly her desire to be baptized and was affirmed by her sponsors and the congregation in her decision. On succeeding Sundays she was presented with the Lord's Prayer and the Apostle's Creed both in English and her native Tamil. The day of her baptism we vested her in the white robe of Baptism and presented her to the congregation. Many people reported how delightful the Service was. Blessed by God in his angels and in his Saints!

We Blessed Animals October 2

St. Francis of Assisi saw everything in creation as his brothers and sisters including animals and even the sun and the moon! He once preached to the birds! We remember him and bless animals each year on the first Saturday in October. We use this prayer that reminds us of our complex relationship with all sorts of animals.

Priest: Blessed are You, O Lord God, King of all creation for you created heaven and earth, and filled it with marvels and beauty. We give you speacial thanks this day for all the animals of the earth, from the eagle soring in the sky, to the fish in the deepest corner of the ocean, from the tiny ant digging its burrows, to the grand whales navigating the sea. They fill us with awe and wonder, and we marvel at your works. We give you thanks for all the flocks and herds, for fish and fowl, who privide us with food and clothing, labor and companionship. We express to you, and to them, our gratitude for all that has been given us. We ask you Lord to make us, the whole human family, responsible for the care of these creatures. Forgive us when we have been cruel, ungrateful and irreverant. Assist us to amend our ways that we me live in harmony with the earth and with these magnificent creatures. Pasta Dinner and the Theology of Fellowship

Over 35 people enjoyed food and company last night at the August parish dinner. It was an enjoyable time for all, and the yard was full of kids. In fact one neighbor called to comment on the pitching prowess of one of the young people. Thank you to Diane Irving for preparing our delicious meal.

Why do we have fellowship events in church? It is an expression of the love we share for one another and reflects God's love for us in Jesus. He was even criticized for his love of parties. Church fellowship also has spiritual benefits. For instance, we tend in life to make social contacts with people like us in age, race, politics, education. At church we come together across ages, races, political outlook and social class. The way we are alike is we are on a journey with God and see life as a gift. This fellowship broadens our social circles and expands our horizons.

Fellowship events also allow some people who might otherwise spend time alone to spend time with other people. According to one Newsweek Article published in 2009 (http://www.newsweek.com/2009/08/20/lonely-planet.html) loneliness has become a chronic problem in our society. Many people suffer. With fellowship dinners the church is able to create places where people can make the connections that are important for us to thrive.

So, next time you go to a church fellowship dinner remember you are imitating the love of God and the friendship there is both a giving and a receiving of spiritual care. This is why some biblical imagery calls heaven a banquet! Thanks be to God and pass the salad dressing!

Preparations for St. John's Farmers' Market

The parish is busy at work preparing for our annual market. The market directly benefits our downtown by providing locally grown nutritious food, creating a meeting place for the downtown community, offering an outdoor eating space on beautiful days, and raising funds to maintain and restore one of Yonkers most beautiful and historic buildings, St. John's Church.

The Market will be every Thursday from July 8 ending on November 18 from 9 AM to 4 PM.

Party for Florence Schmidt

Wednesday Night we celebrated Florence Schmidt who served St. John's Church for 41 years as the parish administrator. She is the middle person in the picture in this posting. About 60 people gathered at the church for appetizers and a meal. Florence was celebrated by her colleague and friends. Florence was instrumental in the running fo a pastoral ministry called the Friends of St. John's, while her largest achievement was the managing of the St. John's Church Farmers Market, the oldest and most successful Farmers Market in Yonkers. Spring Tour a People Pleaser

The tour and lecture given by local notable architect Stephen Byrns was very well received by approximately 50 attendees. He made his case that the church is the most interesting 19th century church in America, and his case rests not only on the artistic merits of the building itself, but several ways in which it pioneered directions architecture took in this country. Stephen is not distributing his lecture yet as there are sufficient numbers of people who wanted to attend and were unable to thus far. Are you one of those people? Stand Against Racism was a Great Success

Dancing, drumming, singing, speaking, all encouraged members of our community to take an active stand against racism in our society. This event was sponsored by the YWCA of Yonkers. This is an annual event which we hope to grow each year. This year there were many events leading up to the rally itself. There were several study circles where people shared their perspectives on racism, and there was a training attended by members of the community, clergy, politicians and police officers which helped explore the causes and effects of behaviors related to minority members in larger groups. Let us all take to work against all forms of discrimination in our city and nation.

The mother of our organist and choirmaster, Hazelle Eleanor Lundquist, died peacefully on Monday, March 15. Please keep Don and Hazelle in your prayers. You can read an obituary and biography of Hazelle here.

Ten People from St. John's Return from Retreat

From Friday, March 12 through Sunday, March 14, ten people from St. John's were at Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. We had a silent retreat in the comfortable guest house of the monastery overlooking the Hudson river. We joined the brothers for their daily prayers and Eucharist, ate together in silence in the lovely refectory, and had 5 sessions as a group looking at the traditional method of prayer, Lectio Divina, which is meditation on scripture as a vehicle to communion with God.

The silence was novel to some of us, but all reported that they came to appreciate it. The majority seemed to report that joining the brothers as they sang the psalms in their four daily prayer times was the most centering and refreshing activity of the week. Using scripture in prayer was not new to several of the members of the group, but people benefited from doing this together.

We learned how to prepare for prayer by choosing time and place carefully, and by paying attention to our body and mind and breathing so that we were able to give our best attention to the presence of God. We also learned to spend the final moments of prayer without thought or expectation of inspiration, but in quiet loving presence with God who loves us and cares for us.

What does the group wish to say to people about the retreat? "Come join us next year!"

Our Youth Overnight was January 30th

Six intelligent youth and 4 handsome adult volunteers held a youth overnight fellowship event in the Rectory a little under two weeks ago. We learned about the Bible, the Apostles, Abraham and Moses in addition to praying, singing, bowling, eating pizza, and playing hide and seek in the church. Watch this video when Father John again terrorizes the youth with question. Isn't it a shame how shy and retiring Sarah is?

Inquirers Class 2010

Our Bishop, the Rev. Mark S. Sisk, seated at the left in this picture, came to our parish on Sunday, January 31. He confirmed two people and received as Anglicans four people at the 10 AM Eucharist. These 6 people prepared for the day by attending classes for three weeks and they worked very hard exploring how to deepen their spiritual life. I, Father John, their humble priest decided to terrorize them at the end of the last session by making this video.
